Distinguished Places

a heart never forgets.
Pulsate city! Rural scans pot of gold.
Man suited, women stilted; empowerment lives
amongst skyscrapers. A frenzy
—even a kingfisher laughs—
beautiful
and absurd. Pot of gold
where the rainbow shines, awaits hopefuls
diligent and determined. Within reach lies the
promised riches for all who dwell. Say,
where that place used to be?
In the heart.

  1. There is a melancholia strolling through the tones of this poem… a battle between the “beautiful and absurd”, which speaks of a longing that hides deep in the dark of the heart. I’ve felt this… in moments when I take so much joy in the city that I end up feeling like I’m betraying by woods.

  2. There’s a nifty contrast going on here between city and rural, fairy tales (that pot of gold) and reality. It’s a snapshot of a divided heart, and it works nicely.
